Recently, I came across a very interesting article in our local paper about the importance of drinking the right kind of fluids while engaged in strenuous exercise, especially during warm and humid conditions. The article was entitled "Take Electrolytes Dead Seriously". The main point of the article was that if you are sweating a great deal you need to drink a liquid containing a good amount of electrolytes. Water, soft drinks, and many of the so-called "sports drinks" are inadequate to maintain a proper electrolyte balance in the cells of the body.
There is a life threatening condition called hyponatremia, which occurs when individuals are sweating profusely and drinking lot's of water, but not getting adequate amounts of electrolytes. An electrolyte insufficiency or imbalance can cause cells to swell with too much water. (There is a longer physiological explanation that I won't get in to). Some cells can handle the swelling --some such as your brain cells --can not. A few years back there was a woman Boston Marathoner who actually died from this condition. She drank lots and lots of water during the race -- the problem was, that was all she drank.
The conclusion of the author was to make sure that your drink contains the electrolytes sodium, potassium and magnesium. He himself reported that when he switched sports drinks (he did not mention names) to one containing more of the above plus another electrolyte, calcium, that he perfomed better on his mountain run than he had before.
